Folks around town rooting for Nwagbuo

Tod Leonard. SDUT Nwagbuo wowed Mike Pompa, Southwestern's head coach in 2005, with his athleticism. "Anybody who can play defensive line in football and power forward in basketball is a tremendous athlete," Pompa said. "You don't see that combination very often." Said Nwagbuo: "I've tried to be a hard worker because that's the only way you get anywhere in life."

Anybody notice that without Travis Johnson Houston got burned on their first play by AP? His job was to eat up blocks there. Here it's to get to the QB (and eat up blockers)

L.T. proclaims he's "the best back" | ProFootballTalk.com

Speaking to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, Tomlinson flashed jealousy about a recent Sporting News article in which Jim Brown interviewed Adrian Peterson. One question posed by Brown suggests that Tomlinson is overrated. The article, in which Brown says he believes Peterson is "the most complete back he's seen in a long time," was given to Tomlinson by a Chargers staffer. "I was sitting there reading it thinking, 'Wow,' " Tomlinson told Farmer. "The difference with me is you can put me out on that field and there will be nothing I can't do. I won't have to come off the field. Adrian has to come off sometimes on third down. Running routes, he's still not there yet. Great downhill runner, powerful, fast, all that stuff. . . . "But anything on that field you want me to do -- throw it, block -- I can do it. That's what I pride myself on is not having any weaknesses. And that's what makes me the best back." (Editor's Note: I read the Jim Brown/Adrian Peterson interview on the plane ride to San Diego for my training camp visit and didn't stop talking about it for a week. I thought it was fantastic and it made me really like Adrian Peterson. Jim Brown's point was that he thinks LT's had the benefit of a good passing game for the better part of his career, which has led to him being overrated.)

Newest Charger says he's finally healthy

Johnson has yet to play in the preseason and won't play Friday against San Francisco. He doesn't know the Chargers' calls and hasn't played end in three years. "I wouldn't do that to him," head coach Norv Turner said. "Our goal is to have him ready for the Oakland game (Sept. 14)." (from the bottom of the article: Forney still battling neck injuries. I think the job belongs to Louis.)

Four weeks ago, Chief Operating Officer Jim Steeg said "thousands of tickets" were unsold for each home game. Tuesday, club spokesman Bill Johnston said there are still "a significant number of tickets available to all of our remaining games. We have sold the most tickets to the Philadelphia game (Nov. 15), but it is not close to selling out."

Chargers make three moves

+

First, the Chargers placed cornerback Brandon Hughes on "Reserve – Injured." Hughes, the team’s fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s preseason game at Atlanta. Wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, the team’s seventh-round draft pick who signed a four-year deal Monday, will spend the entire year on "Reserve – Non Football Injury." Byrd continues to recover from injuries suffered in an automobile accident suffered a week prior to the draft. And finally, the Chargers released linebacker Anthony Felder, an undrafted free agent from California-Berkeley.

Also Monday, the Chargers signed wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, their seventh-round pick in April’s draft, to a four-year contract. In addition to the two additions, the Chargers also made three subtractions Monday. The team waived wide receiver Greg Carr, offensive tackle Dan Gay and wide receiver Rodgeriques Smith. All three players joined the Chargers as undrafted free agents in April. With the moves, the Chargers’ roster currently stands at 78 players. They have make three more transactions by Tuesday at 1 pm in order to reach the NFL-mandated limit of 75 players.
