Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James has been named as the team’s nominee for this year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The award is considered the league’s most-prestigious honor which is given to a player who emphatically excelled in all areas both on and off the field while demonstrating a passion for making a difference in their community.

This is the second consecutive season in which James has been nominated by the Chargers. He’ll look to become the fifth Charger in history to win the award.

The first Chargers player to win the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award was quarterback John Hadl in 1971, the second year of the honor’s existence. In 1983, kicker Rolf Benirschke became the second.

Hall of Fame linebacker and Chargers legend Junior Seau became the third Charger to win the award in 1994, the same year the Chargers made their first and only Super Bowl.

The last Charger to win the award was LaDainian Tomlinson who also shared the honor with former Chargers and then-Saints quarterback Drew Brees in 2006.
