Depending on your viewpoint, the Chargers-Broncos matchup this week just got a whole lot more interesting.
Chargers starting quarterback Justin Herbert was lost for the remainder of the season after incurring a hand injury against the Broncos in the earlier matchup between these two teams. Easton Stick came in to finish but they wound up falling short in the end. With Stick set to face Russell Wilson and Co. for the second time, expectations were set for another loss in a divisional contest. However, things have changed as of Wednesday morning.
Coming into the day, the Chargers were five-point underdogs. But after the news broke that Denver is benching Wilson for backup Jarrett Stidham, the dynamics have changed. Firstly, DraftKings Sportsbook now as the Chargers as three-point underdogs. Secondly, this will be the second consecutive AFC West matchup for the Chargers in which both teams will start their backup passer.
Stidham has zero statistics recorded this season and has appeared in just one game. Stick has started the past two games for the Chargers and has accumulated 651 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and one interception since taking over for Herbert.
In the end, this game may end up being more entertaining for Chargers fans while it’s happening, but it’d be wrong not to bring up that this recent development could hurt the team’s draft position should they come out on top. Entering Week 17, the Chargers currently have the sixth-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
