Asante Samuel Jr.’s diving interception highlights first joint practice with 49ers

Way to ball, rook!

The Chargers’ first joint practice with the 49ers was filled with notable moments from start to finish.

During the one-on-one session, Keenan Allen got the best of former Chargers first-round pick Jason Verrett on a double move before hauling in a deep pass in the end zone. Tyron Johnson later got the best of a defender before making sure the opponent knew what just happened. For that, Brandon Staley made a point to walk on the field and pull Johnson back to the sideline before things could escalate further.

Later during the team session, it was veteran Jimmy Garoppolo against the Chargers’ first-team defense. After getting the better of the Chargers’ defense with a 50-yard bomb to former Bolt Travis Benjamin in the seven-on-seven period, it was L.A. and Asante Samuel Jr. that had the last laugh.

On short pass to wideout Riche James, Samuel broke on the ball and snagged the pick after coming from basically OUTSIDE THE CAMERA LENS to make the play.

Seriously. What a play by the rookie.

James is no slouch of an athlete, either. This play was a culmination of every reason why the Chargers jumped at the selection of Samuel in the second round of this year’s draft. It’s still just preseason, but let’s all hope this is just a teaser of things to come later this season.
