Now that the draft has come and gone, there remain plenty of available free agents who could provide help for teams that didn’t get the chance to fill all of their needs this past weekend.
For the Chargers, I see their remaining needs being kicker (duh), edge rusher (lack of size), and safety (lack of athleticism).
Let’s center today’s discussion around what available free agents do you believe could come in and immediately help the Chargers with a remaining need.
For me, I like former Washington star pass-rusher Ryan Kerrigan. He’s obviously fairly old at 33 years old (by Week 1), but the guy played in and started every game for the first eight years of his career before missing four games in 2019. This past season, he played in all 16 games with inly one start as Ron Rivera transitioned to a 4-3 defense from their previous 3-4, unsurprisingly nudging Kerrigan out of place.
Now that the Chargers are leaning more into a potential 3-4 front, the 6’4, 265-pound Kerrigan would provide immediate depth behind Joey Bosa on the edge. As a rotation piece, he collected 5.5 sacks in 2020 which would have ranked second on the Chargers last year. In the three years prior to his first season with injuries (2016-2018), Kerrigan recorded sack totals of 11, 13, and 13. It’s not often you can bring in a player with almost 100 career sacks and you have to imagine that his presence would also be quite valuable from a mentoring standpoint for the young players like Uchenna Nwosu and Chris Rumph II.
Those are my preliminary thoughts on the matter so now I want to hear yours. Which available free agent piques your interest? Let me know.
Now for today’s links.
