Good morning, Chargers fans, and happy Friday!
For today, let’s kick off the conversation with a discussion on which available free agents you would love to see the Chargers pick before it’s all said and done.
Now I took a look around and personally, I don’t see any that genuinely peak my interest that are also realistic, so this was a tough ask for me. When it came down to it, I went with someone very practical: former Bolts safety Jaylen Watkins.
I’ve mentioned earlier this week that safety is still a need for the team in regards to the position group’s depth. In the room, there’s currently only Derwin James, Nasir Adderley, and Alohi Gilman. The Chargers need depth at free safety behind Nas, so my mind instantly went to Jaylen Watkins. He’s still 29 and has familiarity with the players in the room so it makes sense.
Another guy I think could be another value signing with a fairly high floor is former Jaguars and Bears safety Tashaun Gipson. He’ll be 31 when the season begins but he’s been a fairly steady contributor wherever he’s been. He’s coming off a two-interception season with seven pass breakups in 2020, and has recorded multiple interceptions in six of his nine years in the NFL.
At 6’1 and 212 pounds, he likely fits best at strong safety, but adding a veteran to a young position room has always been something Tom Telesco enjoys doing so I wouldn’t be surprised at a move like this.
Anyways, just some quick thoughts. Now tell me what players come to mind for you.
Now for today’s links.
