According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Chargers are expected to sign former Texans kick returner/punt returner Andre Roberts.
The 33-year old and former Pro Bowler had played in six games this season for the Texans in which he’s caught just one of two targets for 35 yards. As a kick returner, he’s brought back 18 kickoffs for an average of 21.4 yards. He’s done much less work as a punt returner, taking back eight for just 33 total yards.
Roberts was a Second Team All-Pro as recently as last season and a First-Team member back in 2018. All three of his Pro Bowls came over the past three seasons from 2018-2020. In 2020, he led the NFL with a kick return average of 30.0 yards
For his career, Roberts has amassed 3,079 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on 262 receptions.
While this isn’t going to be an immediate fix to the special teams woes, this is a cheap move to help inject some juice into an otherwise lackluster return game.
The #Chargers are expected to sign former #Texans WR Andre Roberts, source said. The former Pro Bowl punt and kick returner quickly has a new landing spot.
