According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Chargers are scheduled to interview Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon for their defensive coordinator position.
Gannon has been in charge of the Colts’ secondary in Indianapolis for the past three seasons and most recently built a group of defensive backs that recorded 13 total interceptions (four returned for touchdowns), including five different players who record at least two.
Prior to joining the Colts, Gannon spent four years (2014-2017) with the Vikings as assistant defensive backs/quality control coach. In his final two campaigns in Minnesota, he helped the unit land among the top-three, including the 2017 season where they finished as the number one defense in the NFL — the first time since 1993 — and allowed just 275.9 yards per game en route to winning the NFC North crown. They were also the only team to finish in the top three in both rushing and passing defense with 83.6 and 192.4 yards per game, respectively.
Notable players he’s worked with include cornerback Xavier Rhodes and safety Harrison Smith.
The #Chargers will interview #Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon for their defensive coordinator job on Brandon Staley’s staff, source said. Gannon was a popular name on several prospective head coach staff lists after thriving in Indy, and he also spoke with the #Bears.
