The Chargers are 1-1 and are set to take on the 0-2 Panthers this Sunday afternoon. Fortunately for the Bolts, Carolina be without reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Christian McCaffrey, so there’s one huge presence the defense will not have to account for this week.
Without CMC, the Panthers offense has been rather ho-hum. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has only thrown for a single touchdown — compared to two interceptions — and hasn’t got a ton of help from his supporting cast outside of deep threat Robbie Anderson (15-223-1). Even so, the likes of Anderson, DJ Moore, and Curtis Samuel all pose as threats for opposing defenses with their speed and athleticism.
Defensively, the Panthers are the youngest unit to take the field in over 10 years. They’re currently headlined by sophomore outside linebacker Brian Burns and 2020 first-round pick, defensive tackle Derrick Brown. They’ve given up a total of 65 points through the first two weeks and have showed no real signs of improvements. They allowed three rushing scores to Josh Jacobs in Week 1, so I expect a heavy dose of both Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley on Sunday.
It’s also Justin Herbert’s second career start and his first where the opposing team will have film of the rookie. Will he have another stellar outing, or will he stumble a bit without the element of surprise on his side?
We’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out!
