On Monday, Chargers fans had a glimmer of hope while the jury was out on the seriousness of Mike Williams’ injury. By Tuesday morning, we gathered a bit more insight into the situation.
On today’s Zoom call with Anthony Lynn prior to practice, the fourth-year coach did not want to put a timetable on Williams’ return.
“He’ll be out for awhile,” Lynn said.
When asked if he would be ready for Week 1, he wouldn’t budge. By the sound of it, Lynn is preparing to be without his jump-ball specialist for the foreseeable future.
And now, we’ve got a new update from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero:
#Chargers WR Mike Williams is expected to miss two to four weeks with his shoulder injury, source said. Coach Anthony Lynn said today he doesn't know if Williams will be ready for the Sept. 13 opener vs. the #Bengals.

It could be Lynn trying not to get anyone’s hopes up, but I wouldn’t put it past him to keep Williams out the extra time in order to make sure he’s as healthy as possible prior to returning to play. For now, the youngsters will have to step it up.
Whether that’s Jalen Guyton, Darius Jennings, or one of the rookies in Joe Reed and K.J. Hill, someone is about to get a lot more playing time over the next month.
Trial by fire usually works, right?
