Former San Diego Chargers wide receiver Reche Caldwell was killed in Tampa Bay on Saturday, according to his mother as confirmed to TMZ. He was 41.

The article states that Caldwell was purportedly shot in the leg and chest by a “couple of people” who “ambushed” him and his girlfriend at his home as they were trying to go out on a date.

The Chargers drafted Caldwell with the 48th overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft out of Florida. He played four seasons in San Diego, totaling 76 catches for 950 yards and seven touchdowns.

Caldwell went on to have a career-best season with the New England Patriots in 2006, catching 61 of 102 targets for 760 yards and four touchdowns while playing with Tom Brady. He spent his final season in Washington, catching 15 of 22 targets for 141 yards.

Brady was among the many players who paid tribute to Caldwell upon the news of his death.

Caldwell finished his career with 1,851 yards and 11 touchdowns over 71 games.

“He was a good person who smiled all of the time,” his mother, Deborah Caldwell, told TMZ.
