On Tuesday morning, Doug Farrar, an NFL writer at USA Today’s Touchdown Wire, posted his rankings of the top zone cornerbacks in the NFL. Among them was Chargers corner Michael David, who came in at the final spot among the players listed.

Davis was a former undrafted free agent who was signed by the Chargers following the 2017 draft out of BYU. This off-season, the Bolts placed a second-round tender on Davis signaling the value they personally put on Davis as a contributor on this defense.

According to Farrar, even with guys like Casey Hayward, Desmond King, and Derwin James among the members of the secondary, it was Davis who performed the best in zone coverage on a team that led the league in zone usage.

“Davis, an undrafted free agent from BYU who joined the team in 2017, can do everything from taking speed receivers up the chute, to breaking up screens, to deflecting quick slants and drags over the middle,” Farrar stated. “In 2019, Davis allowed 19 receptions on 34 targets for 254 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a Positive Play Rate of 50% when playing zone coverage.”

Davis is currently set to be the starting outside corner opposite Hayward in 2020 and I think it’s about time we got behind Davis the same way we have gotten behind Ekeler and other past undrafted players who have made impacts with this franchise. He’ll only benefit more by playing in a defense for another year surrounded by top-tier talent.

And now for today’s links.
