Bill Barnwell of ESPN is doing a fun exercise where he is participating in a hypothetical expansion draft for a 33rd NFL team. For simplicity’s sake, here are the rules laid out by Barnwell, himself:
“All 32 teams have to make five players available in the expansion draft, and only one of those players can have 10 or more years of NFL experience. The crucial difference for this draft is that every player nominated must have played at least one snap for their team in 2019. This eliminates any 2020 draft picks or undrafted free agents.”
Five players from each team would have to be offered up for selection and these are the five suggested by Barnwell with their 2020 salary next to their names.
- LB Denzel Perryman ($7,512,500)
- TE Stephen Anderson ($750,000)
- Barnwell’s pick - DT Cortez Broughton ($694,505)
- WR Jalen Guyton ($675,000)
- WR Jason Moore ($675,000)
As you can see, he ended up going with defensive tackle Cortez Broughton as the lone player selected from the Chargers. Here’s his justification for the pick:
“Perryman is unquestionably talented, but years of injuries led the Chargers to trade up and draft Kenneth Murray in the first round in April. Perryman isn’t playing a hugely important position, so we’ll pass on his cap hold and take a shot on Broughton, who has the sort of explosiveness you can’t teach. He fell to the 242nd pick in the 2019 draft thanks to size (6-foot-2, 291 pounds) and consistency concerns, but if he is able to channel that explosiveness into 10 quarterback hits a year, he could be a valuable player.”
Out of those five players, I firmly believe Broughton is the most valuable, even if he isn’t that close to starting for the Bolts. I think he’s got a great blend of skills that make him a valuable depth piece in the same manner as Damion Square.
How would you all feel about Broughton getting poached in this manner? Big deal or not at all?
