Alright everyone, we’re starting to enter the value rounds of the NFL Draft.

The third round has been notorious over the years for having some of the biggest steals of the draft with an incredible amount of current stars and future hall-of-famers coming from these late day 2 selections. If you can’t think of any off the top of your head, here are a handful of players you should instantly recognize:

  • QB Russell Wilson
  • LB Navarro Bowman
  • WR Steve Smith Sr.
  • DB Tyrann Mathieu
  • RB Frank Gore
  • OG Marshal Yanda
  • TE Jason Witten

That’s a lot of starts, stats, and years in one list.

As much as I would like to say the Chargers have done a good job of finding talent in this round...that’s far from the case. Here are the last seven third-round selections from the Chargers:

  • OT Trey Pipkins
  • DT Justin Jones
  • OG Dan Feeney
  • C Max Tuerk
  • CB Craig Mager
  • OG/C Chris Watt
  • WR Keenan Allen

For those of you keeping score at home, that is one, maybe two if Jones becomes a consistent starter, out of seven selections. And I will note that it’s still too early to label Pipkins as a miss, but he wasn’t exactly the best possible pick on the board at the time of his selection.

Allen was by-far the best pick of the third round in the Tom Telesco era and arguably his best overall pick outside of Derwin James.

This draft has a lot of talent in the middle rounds. Tight end and the interiors of both offensive and defensive lines have some notable names and I think this is a good place to potentially reinforce those spots.

With offensive tackle Austin Jackson winning the fan vote from the second round, maybe the Chargers go with a defensive linemen in this round. Maybe this is the time to commit to a skill position and grab a guy who could be a reliable third wide receiver behind Allen and Mike Williams.

You’re all on the clock in the third round. Who is it going to be?

Who do want the Chargers to select with the 71st-overall pick?
