On Wednesday, ESPN paired up with Pro Football Focus to release an article ranking the top-50 lineman - both on offense and defense - in the NFL. The Chargers were able to land just a single player on the list, and it’s no other than the Big Bear, himself.
Joey Bosa (PFF grade: 73.3) comes in ranked as the 14th-best lineman in the league and the 9th-best defensive lineman, overall. He’s just behind Saints right tackle Ryan Ramczyk and one spot ahead of Chiefs right tackle Mitchell Schwartz.
Here’s what PFF had to say about Bosa so far this season:
Why he’s ranked here: Bosa has been dominant since he stepped foot on an NFL field, posting PFF grades above 86.5 in three of his four full seasons. The fifth-year edge rusher got off to a hot start in 2020, producing an NFL-high 17 pressures in Weeks 1 and 2, but he has dipped off some in the two following weeks. If he can consistently perform at that same level we saw to start, he could play his way into the top 10 of these rankings.
I unfortunately have to echo the sentiments about Bosa’s downturn in play the last few games. While I also believe opposing offense are scheming hard to mitigate the pass rush, Bosa has still matched-up with less-than-stellar talent across from him. Against the Bucs he faced a rookie - a good rookie - but still a rookie. Against the Panthers, he saw former Chargers lineman Trent Scott and Taylor Moton. It could all be a culmination of underwhelming play from the entire defensive line, but Bosa needs to find a way to win with his talent alone on a more consistent basis. Otherwise, he won’t ever find himself among the best of the best.
Now for today’s links.
