The Chargers played another really good game on offense for the second-straight week, but once again it was deemed null and void as another 17-point lead evaporated in their 30-27 loss to the Saints last night on Monday Night Football.
Despite another second-half collapse, the Bolts are still playing generally well. After earning a fairly-positive grade against the Bucs, they walk away from Week 6 with a “B-”, courtesy of CBS Sports’ John Breech.
Here’s what Breech had to say about Monday night’s game:
“Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense got off to a hot start in New Orleans, jumping out to a 20-3 lead, but then they hit a lull, which allowed the Saints to get back in the game. Although Herbert struggled for most of the second half, he came through in the clutch with a 64-yard TD late in the fourth quarter that gave L.A. a 27-20 lead. Herbert also set the Chargers up for a potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation, but Michael Badgely missed off the upright from 50 yards away. Defensively, the Chargers got diced up by Drew Brees in the second half despite the fact that the Saints quarterback struggled to throw the ball downfield.”
Heck, even with the defense softening up in the second half, this one came down to the kicker, so kudos for variety’s sake. It’s been a rough start to the season for Badgley, who hasn’t looked anything like his rookie year over the past two seasons. I don’t see how you can make it in the NFL if you can’t hit from 50+ yards more than you miss. That’s just how the NFL is going right now. It will be interesting to see if competition is brought in to help ignite the fire inside Badgley to fix these issues.
And now for today’s links.
