Rapoport: Chargers have not moved on from Philip Rivers, could franchise tag him

Despite reports on Monday morning that the LA Chargers had officially decided to move on from quarterback Philip Rivers, that picture became more murky as the day went on. After Fox’s Jay Glazer said it was all but over, Marty Caswell of XTRA 1360 in San Diego said those reports were “incorrect.” By Monday afternoon, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said that the team had made no decisions on Rivers yet and still had to meet to discuss those decisions.

It sounds as though Rapoport doesn’t have any real information on Rivers other than the fact that there is no news. So I take it that his speculation about the franchise tag is simply that: speculation. The team is well within its rights to franchise tag Rivers, a free agent in March, and because he’s a quarterback it makes it more likely than any other position. However, it seems as though the only news on Monday is that there is no news.
