Chargers have their initial 53 for the 2019 season

A few interesting decisions

The Los Angeles Chargers have their “initial” 53 man roster for the 2019 season.

There are a few surprises here.

QB

The team went with 5th round pick Easton Stick over Cardale Jones, despite Jones having the better preseason. Honestly, this was the right move, Stick has more room to grow here and Jones had progressed slowly over multiple seasons.

Safety

The team is rolling with only 4 Safeties right now. Adrian Phillips, Rayshawn Jenkins, Roderic Teamer, and Nassir Adderley. Derwin James will be placed on the IR tomorrow so that he can return this season. The team decided to drop Jaylen Watkins AND Adarius Pickett, so they must be confident in that group, as well as the 5 CB’s they kept.

Wide Receiver

The team is rolling with just 5 WRs. Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman, and Geremy Davis. It’s surprising to see them waive both Andre Patton and Artavis Scott. I guess they’re hoping both can slip through unclaimed to the practice squad.

Linebacker

The team is going with 8 linebackers. Thomas Davis, Kyzir White, Denzel Perryman, Jatavis Brown, Uchenna Nwosu, Drue Tranquill, Emeke Egbule, and Nick Dzubnar. That is a lot of LB’s and I think this the first position a cut might be made if they claim a player off waivers from another team. Dzubnar might not be long for the team.

The biggest take away here, is this 53 is very fluid. There will be at least 1 change in the next 24 hours when Derwin is shifted to the IR.
