Tonight, the Los Angeles Chargers play host to the Seattle Seahawks in this week 3 preseason contest. The most notable storyline heading into the game is that the Chargers are without their superstar safety Derwin James (and will remain without him for at least most of the regular season). With that in mind, we will obviously be watching the defensive back group, especially Jaylen Watkins, Adrian Phillips and Roderic Teamer, to see how they will respond to being without the defense’s most dynamic player and one of its most vocal leaders. The three can each produce a reasonable facsimile of aspects of James’ game and it will be up to Gus Bradley to mix and match to try produce a comparable result.
Offensively, the offensive line continues to be a significant worry. While the interior of the line has shown some promise at times, the tackle situation remains an unmitigated disaster with not one of Sam Tevi, Trey Pipkins, or Trent Scott being an NFL-caliber starter.
Ultimately, though, tonight is mostly about players trying to make their case for inclusion at the bottom of the 53-man roster, and that’s what we will need to be keeping an eye on throughout.
