Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers went on Sirius XM NFL Radio and discussed both his and running back Melvin Gordon’s ongoing contract negotiations. He expressed that his expectation and hope is to remain with the team next season. And while he seemed willing to get a deal done before the season, he seemed untroubled by the possibility of playing the season out and revisiting contract talks afterward.
Asked if waiting to sign an extension would leave more money available for “a running back,” Rivers responded, “If it does, awesome.” He then expanded by praising Gordon and what the star running back brings to the team.
Entering 2019 on the final year of his contract, Philip Rivers told us he has no issue playing it out & if it leaves a little more money for Melvin Gordon, he's all for it....

As we wait for the resolution of the Gordon holdout, it seems clear that the issue won’t be the need to prioritize Rivers’ money this Summer. Unfortunately for those hoping to see Gordon suit up in lightning bolts again, he and the team appear to remain at an impasse with the Chargers holding firm on their desire to not overpay for an easily replaceable position and Gordon recognizing that he needs to maximize his last guaranteed opportunity to really get paid.
