On the second day of the NFL’s legal tampering period of free agency, the Los Angeles Chargers agreed to terms with Thomas Davis. The fine folks over at SB Nation, reviewed and graded the move positively:
Chargers sign: LB Thomas Davis
Competition never hurt anybody. The Chargers have two young linebackers in Jatavis Brown and Denzel Perryman, but decided to add some competition by signing veteran linebacker Thomas Davis to a two year deal. Davis isn’t as spry as he used to be, but can still add value to a defense that wants an athletic linebacker to rotate into their defense.
Short-term grade: B
Long-term grade: B
After playing 14 years for the Carolina Panthers, Davis is no longer the All Pro he was in 2015, but he is still a quality player that should have at least a couple years left at a high level. He’s also a leader and was the 2014 Walter Payton Man of the Year.
SB Nation’s grade of a B seems fair given that the deal is unlikely to have a huge impact, but the potential reward still outweighs the likely risk. Two years and $10.5 million for a three-time Pro Bowler with gas left in the tank is a good, solid deal.
