Chargers S Derwin James announces he will change the name on the back of his jersey

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Los Angeles Chargers Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers star rookie defensive back, Derwin James, has announced via his Instagram account that he intends to wear the name “James Jr.” on the back of his jersey for next season. The Athletic’s Chargers beat writer, Sam Fortier, had that news via Twitter this morning:

James, who fell to the Chargers in the middle of the first round of last year’s NFL Draft, was one of the key players in one of the league’s better defenses. He lined up at just about every defensive position outside of the defensive line. He excelled at nearly every aspect of playing defensive back. And he filled a leadership role that is certainly uncommon for a first-year player in the National Football League. He was named a first-team All Pro by both the Associated Press and Pro Football Writers Association.

He looks like he will be one of the league’s best players for a long time and next year he will be sporting a different name on the back of his jersey.
