Chargers bring in 2 new faces

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs at Atlanta Falcons Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

This weekend was crazy with all the roster activity from each team. All 32 teams had to drop 37 players, then they could place waiver claims on any of those 1184 players they might want, wait to see if they had the highest priority and were awarded the player, then drop another player to make room for their awarded player.

What a mess.

When all the dust settled, the Chargers were awarded 2 players:
T.Y. McGill - DT - Kansas City Chiefs
Emmanuel Ellerbee - LB - Atlanta Falcons

The corresponding moves the Chargers made to bring in those 2 players wound up being waiving QB Cardale Jones, who the team has now signed to the practice squad, and LB Hayes Pullard.

T.Y. McGill, 6’0 300lbs, is entering his 4th season in the NFL. He has yet to start a game however, he’s seen action in 28 games and has 18 tackles, 5 sacks, a safety, 2 PD and a FF. He looks like he fits the mold of what the Chargers seem to like from the DT position. He has above average speed/burst from the DT position and likes to penetrate upfield. I think we are all still hoping that the team brings in Johnathan Hankins, but the team needed more bodies at DT either way. Plus, it looks like he was in high demand, 3 teams put in waiver requests for him.

At LB the Chargers brought in Emmanuel Ellerbee. Ellerbee is hyper athletic, at 230lbs he had a 42” vertical, 10’1” broad jump, 4.58 40 yard dash. His final 2 years at Rice he totaled 239 tackles. This preseason for the Falcons he had 12 tackles. Like McGill, he fits the mold of the what the Chargers are trying to do, get faster. It’s interesting to see that the team waived Hayes Pullard to open the spot for him. Pullard had a pretty outstanding preseason and is obviously EXTREMELY familiar with the system but obviously he is getting a bit long in the tooth.

I’d suspect both players will probably be inactive week 1 however both of them do come in at relatively thin positions, especially DT where Corey Liuget will be suspended, rookie Justin Jones is banged up and didn’t play in the preseason, and Darius Philon is banged up.
