UPDATE: After one kickoff and one punt there is no sign of Derwin James. This was a fun idea while it lasted, I guess.
During today’s pregame show on CBS, the announcers casually mentioned that Los Angeles Chargers rookie safety Derwin James will be returning kicks today against the Buffalo Bills. With Travis Benjamin sidelined by injury and J.J. Jones having made one of the worst return blunders you’ll ever see last week, this makes sense. James is a dynamic playmaker and it is smart for the team to look for ways to get him more involved.
Here’s hoping that James is returning both kickoffs and punts today because this could get fun.

The Chargers have a fair number of exciting players on their roster, but few are anywhere near as exciting as James. Hopefully, he will do such a good job that it will not matter when Travis Benjamin is healthy enough to return and this can be a season-long plan for the Chargers. They certainly need something to ignite the special teams.
