Los Angeles Chargers final 53-man roster announced

Find out who will be wearing lightning bolts this season.

The deadline for trimming the roster down to 53 players has passed and this is the initial 53-man roster before the Los Angeles Chargers add anyone from waivers or via free agency.

Quarterbacks (3)

  • Philip Rivers
  • Geno Smith
  • Cardale Jones

Even after Smith distanced himself from Jones in the backup quarterback competition, the team still decided to keep Jones on as a third quarterback. Seems like a waste of space when the team needs depth at a number of other positions.

Running Backs / Full Backs (5)

  • Melvin Gordon
  • Austin Ekeler
  • Detrez Newsome
  • Justin Jackson
  • Derek Watt

The top two spots of the Chargers running back depth chart were never really in doubt, but Newsome surprised to take the third spot. The team still felt the need to keep Justin Jackson after he was injured for most of the preseason. They likely didn’t think he would have gotten past waivers.

Wide Receivers (6)

  • Keenan Allen
  • Mike Williams
  • Tyrell Williams
  • Travis Benjamin
  • Geremy Davis
  • J.J. Jones

One of the bigger surprises of the cuts was the waiving of Dylan Cantrell. With Artavis Scott getting put on the reserve/injured list, J.J. Jones was able to be kept as a potential threat in the return game.

Tight Ends (2)

  • Virgil Green
  • Sean Culkin

This wasn’t a very impressive group and the competition for these spots was not exactly a fierce one. With the team only keeping two tight ends, is a Gates signing in the near future?

Offensive Line (9)

  • Russell Okung
  • Dan Feeney
  • Mike Pouncey
  • Forrest Lamp
  • Joe Barksdale
  • Michael Schofield
  • Sam Tevi
  • Scott Quessenberry
  • Cole Toner

With the return of Lamp from injury, the Chargers have a very strong starting five and pretty solid depth behind them. The biggest surprise is the waiving of former starting center Spencer Pulley in favor of Cole Toner.

Defensive Line (8)

  • Melvin Ingram
  • Joey Bosa
  • Damion Square
  • Isaac Rochell
  • Brandon Mebane
  • Justin Jones
  • Chris Landrum
  • Darius Philon

This is a very talented group at the ends and the tackles may be just decent enough to make this a dominant front.

Linebackers (7)

  • Denzel Perryman
  • Kyle Emanuel
  • Uchenna Nwosu
  • Hayes Pullard
  • Kyzir White
  • Jatavis Brown
  • Nick Dzubnar

The linebacker group is not terribly deep, but it does feature some exciting players in Perryman, White, and Nwosu. Nick Dzubnar sneaks by as a core special teams player contributor.

Cornerbacks (6)

  • Casey Hayward
  • Trevor Williams
  • Desmond King
  • Craig Mager
  • Brandon Facyson
  • Michael Davis

Once healthy, this is one of the very best corner groups in the entire NFL.

Safeties (4)

  • Jahleel Addae
  • Adrian Phillips
  • Rayshawn Jenkins
  • Derwin James

This group was more than adequate last year and the addition of James gives them an opportunity to be special.

Special Teams (3)

  • K Caleb Sturgis
  • P Drew Kaser
  • LS Mike Windt

While Roberto Aguayo showed well in the kicking competition he was never going to make the team unless Sturgis stumbled and he never did.

This is hardly final as the Chargers will surely make additional moves before the Kansas City Chiefs game, but this is what they’re rolling with for now.

What do you think about the roster? What choices would you have made differently?
