Los Angeles Chargers add new safety off waivers

NCAA Football: Brigham Young at East Carolina James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

In the wake of losing safety Jaylen Watkins for the year to an ACL tear, the Los Angeles Chargers have added Micah Hannemann. He was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Browns and will join a Chargers secondary which features one of his former collegiate teammates in Michael Davis. The two played together at BYU.

Hannemann has decent size for a safety at 6’0”, 195 pounds. He had originally signed with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent a few months ago. If you recall Hannemann’s collegiate career, it is probably for his interception against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2015. Throughout his career, he notched 123 tackles, four interceptions, and a single sack.

His chances of cracking the Chargers’ rather deep secondary are not especially good, but with Watkins out, there will at least be snaps to go around as we head into weeks 3 and 4 of the preseason.
