In ESPN’s latest NFL preseason rankings, the Los Angeles Chargers broke into the top-10, moving up two spots from 12th. In the newest rendition of the rankings, the writers also named a player to watch for each team throughout the next few weeks of the preseason. Here is what Chargers Beat Writer Eric Williams had to say about the Bolts:
“RB Detrez Newsome. An undrafted rookie out of Western Carolina, Newsome came to life in the second half against the Arizona Cardinals, scoring on a 6-yard run and doing a backflip for his touchdown celebration. He also finished with four receptions for 34 receiving yards. Newsome, who also had a 37-yard run for a score called back due to a clipping penalty, has a chance to earn a roster spot as the No. 3 running back.”
I have to say I agree with Eric. Newsome took full advantage of Justin Jackson’s absence from Saturday’s game and showed he has what it takes to play in this league. In the same vein of Austin Ekeler and his journey to the final 53 last year, Newsome is showing the propensity for big plays and the uncanny ability to make something out of nothing. If Jackson’s injury lingers for another week, I fully expect a larger dose of carries for Newsome against the Seahawks this week.
