Longtime owner of the Chargers, Alex Spanos passed away this morning at the age of 95, 2 months and one day after his wife of 70 years, Faye Spanos, also passed. He is survived by his 4 children, 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Alex Spanos was the definition of a self made man. He started adult life as a bomber tail gunner during WWII. Following the war he borrowed $800 and opened a sandwich truck in 1951. By 1955 he had made his first Million dollars, and in 1984 he bought 60% of the Chargers.
He has not been in charge of team operations since 1993 when he turned over control, and the title of CEO to his son Dean Spanos.
Regardless of any opinions of Dean and the move to Los Angeles, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Spanos Family at this time.
