Chargers football is finally back, but there’s a few members of the 90 man roster who won’t take part in tonight’s game against the Seattle Seahawks:
Some Chargers not dressed for preseason debut: CB Jason Verrett, CB Trovon Reed, WR Dontrelle Inman, TE Jeff Cumberland, RB Kenjon Barner

Jason Verrett is still making his recovery from the ACL injury that ended his season early last year, and it makes sense not to rush him back in this one. Dontrelle Inman likewise, as the WR underwent core muscle surgery in late May. I’d expect both of them to feature at some point later in preseason.
Jeff Cumberland missed practice on Friday due to leg soreness, so holding him out tonight is seemingly being done as a precaution. The Chargers have a lot of TE’s on their roster, so this gives guys like Sean McGrath and Sean Culkin a bigger opportunity to show what they can do. The same can be said at RB, as Kenjon Barner’s absence could be good news for somebody like Kenneth Farrow, who needs all the snaps he can get if he wants to make this roster.
Trovon Reed being out is somewhat disappointing - there’s probably a rational reason behind it, but Reed was one of the few bright spots towards the end of last season, and I was looking forward to seeing him play as he looks to compete for the slot CB role. That’ll have to wait another week, but Trevor Williams or Michael Davis (or any of the other CBs the Chargers are carrying right now) could make a big impression tonight and get a head-start on the competition.
UPDATE: Eric Williams has just tweeted out more names that won’t be taking part tonight. Joining the aforementioned five are TE Sean McGrath, DE Chris Landrum, CB Craig Mager, WR Mike Williams, OL Forrest Lamp, WR Andre Patton, and CB Brad Watson.
