The Chargers pick up an instinctive safety in Tre Boston in free agency. The 2011 draft pick out of North Carolina had visits with Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and the Chargers. Some thought he would pick the Bills due to his familiarity with former defensive coordinator and now Bills head coach Sean Mcdermott. I thought it was obvious who he was signing with.
Tre, pls.

For Bleacher Report last year we graded Boston as the 11th best free safety out of 50. That is good. Boston graded comfortably better than any safety on the Chargers roster last year He's not a great athlete but his instincts allow him to get to spots faster safeties can't.
Here are 2 clips from 6 games. The first is against the 3 NFC teams that play a lot of spread type offense.

Boston is not a great tackler. He's inconsistent at best and leave a lot to be desired effort wise. Against the pass, I think he's very good. He should have every opportunity to start at that deep free safety role and he should excel in it. Playing with 2 good corners will likely elevate his game as well. I like the signing. It's not a home run, but it's an upgrade. That's all you can ask for in may.
What do you think of the signing?
