With the 7th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers select... Deshaun Watson out of Clemson (according to Mel Kiper Jr, anyway). His logic for the pick is thus:
This could be the shocker on Thursday night. The 35-year-old Philip Rivers has taken a lot of hits over the years, and the Chargers could want a fresh start after moving to L.A. Another name to watch is Malik Hooker, the best center fielder-type safety in this class.
The Chargers have not been shy about the fact that they are doing their due diligence on this year’s quarterback class and Philip Rivers certainly is not getting any younger. Still, it will be a bit of a surprise if Tom Telesco is able to pull the trigger and the Chargers end up with the signal-caller out of Clemson.
There is also a lot of chatter that the Jaguars plan to select Watson, so he may not even be there at 7 for Telesco to have to make that decision.
Anyway, what would you think if the Chargers drafted the heir to Philip Rivers with the 7th pick in this year’s draft? Is it really time to look to the future?
