Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon is undoubtedly one of the most talented players in this year’s NFL Draft. In 25 games during his Freshman and Sophomore seasons, Mixon totaled 2,027 rushing yards and another 894 receiving yards. That’s just under 120 yards from scrimmage per game. And he did this playing for a major program competing in a very competitive conference.
Unfortunately, to say that Mixon had some off the field concerns would be an understatement. He was suspended for the entire 2014 season after he punched a woman in the face. She suffered a broken jaw, cheekbone, and eye socket. A surveillance video became available when Mixon’s attorneys released it. Honestly, a less talented player would probably disappear from almost every team’s draft board for such an incident, and it’s debatable whether Mixon should suffer the same fate.
ESPN’s Eric Williams reports that Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn met with Mixon and that he is still on their draft board. He would represent a massive improvement at the RB2 and he will likely provide a big value wherever he is picked as he will most likely slide out of the first round and possibly out of the second.
Still, the Chargers have to ask themselves if Mixon’s talent is worth the off-the-field concerns. What do you think?
