Listed at 6’1” and 298 pounds, the former Utah Ute provides some much-needed size and passable athleticism along the Los Angeles defensive line. It will be interesting to see how new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley utilizes him in 2017 coming off a 2016 campaign in which he was third on the team in quarterback hits according to Ricky Henne (via Twitter).
Traditional stats understate the quality of the Chargers’ 2016 defense. By Football Outsiders’ DVOA, they were the 8th best defense in the NFL (and 9th against the pass and 15th against the run). So, given that quality, it is encouraging to see the front office making a point to re-sign contributors like Palepoi and Damion Square (whom they locked up last week).
(It’s also worth noting that Palepoi still has one game left on his PED suspension.)
What do you think of the Palepoi re-signing? Are you happy to have him back in the fold?
