The Chargers should sign CB Patrick Robinson again

Signing this former Charger should be the top priority in Free Agency right now.

Ex-Chargers corner Patrick Robinson got cut by the Colts earlier this morning:

The Chargers are currently strapped for cash after re-signing S Jahleel Addae and adding new Free Agent LT Russell Okung. To clear space the Chargers can cut Left Tackle King Dunlap and save a little over $5M which would be enough to grab Robinson.

The Chargers have two starters in Jason Verrett and Casey Hayward but the third corner spot is up for grabs. The team cut Brandon Flowers earlier in the week and the depth chart today consists of Craig Mager, Trovon Reed and Trevor Williams. Patrick Robinson would instantly upgrade the cornerback group. PRob played on the outside for the Chargers two years ago but was kicked inside in nickel packages. That would be his role with the Chargers today. In 2015, Patrick Robinson was one of the best slot corners in the NFL. Pro Football Focus ranked Robinson as the 2nd best slot corner in the NFL in 2015, behind only Chris Harris, allowing 0.78 per coverage snap.

There may be a new coaching staff but Robinson has familiarity with this team from two years ago. The added bonus is Robinson can play on the outside in case Jason Verrett gets banged up again next season. Robinson would be the starting slot corner and Verrett insurance.

The cornerback draft class is pretty talented this year and adding Patrick Robinson gives the Chargers flexibility to wait to draft a corner as well. By adding a DB in Day 2 or 3 of the draft means they can come in and compete for a back-up role and be brought on slowly. The corner can come in without high expectations and leave the Chargers draft options open. They can even elect to not draft a corner and wait another year if the right guys don’t fall to them.

Patrick Robinson is the perfect fit and signing him should be the top priority in Free Agency for the Chargers right now.
