As tempting as it is to ascribe the improvement to the devastating one-two punch of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, they were one of the few elements of this team firing on full cylinders during the 0-4 start. The difference has been much-improved tackling in the secondary and a drastically improved takeaway rate. The Chargers have racked up 12 interceptions in their past five games, with the only zero-interception game in that stretch coming against Tom Brady.

“We played good coverage,” Hayward said about the play. “We tried to change it up. We never play Cover 2. But on my side we had Cover 2. I was trying to bait it. And that is the route, if you can fit it in there on the seven route -- we try to do it. I just picked the ball.”
