Russell Okung Has Been the Los Angeles Chargers Best Newcomer This Season

Who’s the Chargers’ best new player? We make our claims.

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Well, this is not really open to debate given that the Chargers’ newcomers have by and large been mediocre to poor, so rather than ask who the Chargers’ best newcomer has been, we will just ask you to say why it’s Russell Okung:

Kyle Posey: Has to be Okung. In what little success the team has had running, it’s been behind him. The Chargers average a whopping 6 yards a pop running around the left end. That’s 5th best in the NFL. Everywhere else they are below average. He’s also been the key to keeping the QB clean. Okung has been one of the few bright spots on the team.

Jamie Hoyle: What KP said. Okung has been a rock is pass protection and a bulldozer in the run game. He is easily their best OL and is playing at an extremely high level. I don't know why the Chargers insist on running right, but the run game would look dramatically different if they just did what everyone else seems to know they need to do and run left.

Jamie Sewell: Yeah, I think this is going to be a consensus answer. Okung has been superb, and there hasn't really been any other newcomer that's performed at anywhere near the standard he has. Shoutout to Desmond King and Austin Ekeler, though.

I wonder how this answer would differ if their top two picks were healthy...

Jason Michaels: I fully understand what I'm typing, but Younghoe Koo is probably our finest newcomer this year. After reviewi--Nah it's Okung. Other players have been quite good this season, but as for the new recruits, he is head and shoulders over both new players and coaching staff

Though, Cardale Jones might end up being the most important newcomer added-- we just won't really know this season (hopefully!!)

Richard Wade: The Okung signing was always going to have a big impact on the season and so far that impact has been a positive one. He has honestly played better than I hoped when he was signed. He looks like one of the better offensive linemen in the league right now and he is clearly the best lineman on the team.

Michael Peterson: Russell Okung has been the least L7 Weenie on the entire line and I commend him for it. He has kept Rivers clean and has been a positive in the run game. It's all we can ask for at this point.

Matthew Stanley: He’s been a big upgrade at left tackle for the Chargers. The team has been successful when they run his direction and he’s helped solidify the pass protection, and most importantly, he’s been healthy.

What do you think? Can you make an argument for anyone other than Russell Okung? Tell us in the comments.
