The Chargers should trade for 49ers safety Eric Reid

The SB Nation NFL team sites will be doing theme weeks all throughout the 2017 NFL season. This week’s theme is: What's the one trade you would make right now?

The Los Angeles Chargers, like most NFL teams, are flawed. One of their biggest flaws is that they lack quality play from the safety position. Jahleel Addae is much better than he was when he came into the league, but he still is not going to make positive game-changing plays with any regularity. Tre Boston was an interesting signing because he had played well in a more limited role, but he has been a disappointment with the Chargers. Now, most flaws from a personnel standpoint cannot be solved in the middle of the season, but this is one that perhaps could be.

49ers Safety Eric Reid is a talented player that is capable of playing as the deep safety or in the box. He has even played some linebacker this season. He is also only 25-years-old. Why would a player like this be available let alone affordable? Well, he missed a few games with injury and when he came back he had lost his job. The 49ers are in the middle of a rebuild and Reid is in the final year of his deal. They will want to spend in free agency this offseason, so if they let him walk they may not even be looking at a compensatory pick anyway.

The Chargers defense is playing well this season, but this is the type of move that could push them to that next level. Gus Bradley’s defense relies a lot on quality safety play and this would bolster that in a very meaningful way. Tom Telesco needs to find out whether or not this talented young player can be had at a discount. The 49ers under John Lynch have shown a willingness to make moves and Telesco is the Coupon God after all.

What do you think? What one trade would you like to see the Chargers make before the deadline next Tuesday?
