Chargers waive OLB Ben Gardner

Gardner had a good preseason, but clearly didn't do enough to overtake Tourek Williams.

The Chargers have waived OLB Ben Gardner. Originally a seventh round pick by the Cowboys in 2014, Gardner had been on the Chargers practice squad since November 2015 and will almost certainly be back there, presuming he clears waivers - which isn't necessarily a given.

Gardner had a productive preseason with 10 tackles, 2 sacks, and a FF, and was one of the few players on the Chargers second team defense who ever stood out (in a good way). Unfortunately for him, it looks like Tourek Williams has just about managed to hold him off and keep his spot on the active roster.

Gardner being cut isn't an unexpected move, but there's definitely an argument to be made that he outperformed Tourek Williams in preseason, who appeared to take a step back from a year ago. Regardless, if no other team claims him he should be back on the Chargers practice squad, developing there (and possibly making a push to take Tourek's job in the future).
