Chargers Promote Asante Cleveland from Practice Squad, Waive Andre Williams

NFL: Preseason-San Francisco 49ers at San Diego Chargers Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

San Diego Chargers tight end and future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Colts in Indianapolis. And this move is clearly an effort to provide depth at the position in the increasingly likely event that Gates is inactive.

The former Miami Hurricanes tight end spent time with New England and San Francisco before the Chargers claimed him off waivers in the latter part of the 2015 season. He has played in just over half a season’s worth of NFL games and has one reception on one target for one yard to his name. If he plays Sunday, here’s hoping he’s not asked to do too much.

To make room for Cleveland, the Chargers have waived Andre Williams. Williams was claimed off waivers from the New York Giants prior to the first game of the season but he has been inactive on game day in both weeks one and two. Presumably, the addition of Dexter McCluster made Williams even more expendable than he already was.
