REPORT: Chargers work out Ronnie Hillman

Could another running back be on the way for the Chargers?

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

On the cusp of the Chargers signing Dexter McCluster they also worked out another former player from an AFC West division rival, this time, it’s ex-Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman:

The assumption is that Hillman had a workout prior to the Chargers signing Dexter McCluster but I guess there is an outside chance the team does bring on the one-time San Diego State Aztec. If they do intend on picking up Ronnie Hillman there a few scenarios that could help facilitate bringing him onboard because the Chargers most likely won’t carry 5 running backs on the team’s 53 man roster.

First scenario, the Chargers just swap running backs and cut Andre Williams and Hillman takes his spot on the “roster.” Williams has been inactive since he was picked up off waivers and it’d probably be the same case for Hillman on a short week plus McCluster was just added.

Next would be that the Chargers cut Kenneth Farrow and put him on the practice squad and have Gordon, McCluster and either Hillman or Williams as the RB3 then tag the other as inactive on game day.

The last scenario would be that the Chargers view Dexter McCluster as strictly a wide receiver or solely a special teams player. That would mean the WR group would be at 5 with Travis Benjamin, Tyrell Williams, Dontrelle Inman, Griff Whalen and Dexter McCluster. Then the running back group would be at 4 with Melvin Gordon, Kenneth Farrow, Andre Williams and Ronnie Hillman.

This might be a moot point because the team could’ve chosen Dexter McCluster as the running back replacement for Danny Woodhead over Ronnie Hillman but there might still be a possibility that the Chargers add Hillman as well.

UPDATE:

Well, that settles that.
