As first reported by Annie Heilbrunn, the San Diego Chargers today released wide receiver James Jones. While clearly more talented than the likes of Dontrelle Inman (who will almost certainly make the final 53-man roster), Jones had reportedly struggled to learn the playbook after joining the team after training camp was already underway.

It’s unfortunate that Jones was not able to make the team, but it should come as no surprise given that he was consistently running with the second-team offense in preseason and was seeing limited snaps and targets doing so.

This is probably good news for those who were hoping that Isaiah Burse would make the team, and it’s possible that Burse’s ability to return kickoffs after Branden Oliver sustained a season-ending injury played a role in this. It’s also possible that the team would favor Javontee Herndon for that role given his longer tenure with the team, but Burse’ arguably superior talent and inarguably superior health makes that a bit of a long shot.
