Jason Verrett is getting some love from a major sports news outlet. The latest issue of Sports Illustrated featured a glowing review of the Chargers star cornerback as they named him the teams "Mr. Indispensable". Now, Chargers fans know just how great of a player Verrett is, but its nice to see him getting praise from a place like Sports Illustrated.
Here is a little bit of what they had to say about San Diego’s stud defensive back:
Nothing but high-fives for the bolts third year cover man. I would say that is a pretty accurate summation of Jason Verrett. A smart, quick, corner versatile enough to play both inside and outside while locking down opposing teams star receivers, and earning Pro Football Focus’ second highest pass-coverage grade in the process. I really liked that they mentioned how Verrett’s skills really gives the whole defense some options. When you have a player who can be lined up one-on-one on a receiver and essentially erase him from the game, that gives a defense the ability to run certain plays and coverages they may not have been able to run had they needed to devote an extra man to that one receiver.
My take
Jason Verrett is one of the best corners in the entire NFL. Period. Exclamation point. Emoji. The Chargers pro-bowl cornerback has already proven he can compete with the best receivers professional football has to offer. Last season Verrett went up against some high profile names in Antonio Brown, Alshon Jeffery, and Golden Tate, just to name a few, and the Chargers cover man was able to come out on top more often than not. Verrett's superb technique and football intelligence, combined with the confidence he has in his abilities, allows him to be sussessful in whatever situation he is thrust into against any opponent. Jason Verrett's presence on the field makes the Chargers a better defensive unit, and he is without question indispensable.
Its nice that others are starting to see what Chargers fans see when they watch him. Verrett still does not get as much national attention as he deserves, large in part because of the team he plays for. That will not be the case for very much longer. Verrett is such a special player he will eventually transcend his market limitations and his will become a name every NFL fan will recognize.
