In somewhat of a surprising move, the Chargers have filled Jeff Cumberland's roster spot with the signing of a cornerback, more specifically second-year player Mike Lee from Fort Valley State.
I say it’s surprising because it seems like the Chargers are set at CB - I'd be shocked if Verrett, Flowers, Hayward, Williams, and Mager aren't all on the final 53, and with the talent elsewhere I doubt they carry a 6th CB.
In all honesty, Lee is most likely just a 'camp body' - he'll be here for a few weeks before getting cut, then continue bouncing around from place to place trying to fulfil his NFL dreams. Having already been cut from the Falcons and Eagles practice squads, the Chargers could be his last opportunity before his window slams shut.
If there's one thing that could make him stand out, it's his size. The Chargers have a strangely small secondary; with Lee being 6'1, the coaches may be inclined to take a closer look at him to see if there's talent to work with. According to nfldraftscout.com he also had a vertical jump of 39.5, so there's definitely some raw athleticism to work with. However, at age 25, with no past NFL experience and coming from a small school (where he didn't stand out), the odds are pretty firmly stacked against him making the team.
