Another Chargers practice today and another day Travis Benjamin, Javontee Herndon, Sean Lissemore, Tenny Palepoi and Jatavis Brown did not participate. New to that list were Darrell Stuckey and Casey Hayward, who were watching practice today. Unfortunately, Chargers starting left guard might be another name added to that list. Orlando Franklin went down during 11-on-11's today grabbing his right knee. He was able to stand up, put weight on it and run a little bit before being escorted by a trainer to the locker room.
Franklin did leave under his own power but was coincidentally having one of his best days in camp thus far. He held his own in 1-on-1's against Darius Philon and helped clear some lanes for TDs in a few goal line drills. Once Franklin left the field, Kenny Wiggins took his spot at left guard with the starters. Two combos I would've rather seen: Max Tuerk at C and Matt Slauson moved to LG or just Donavon Clark taking over LG. A few plays later Darius Philon walked Kenny Wiggins back into the pocket forcing Philip Rivers to throw the ball away. Wiggins, for now, seems to be the next guard up in the OL rotation.
A more serious injury occurred to the Chargers newest pick-up DE Zamir Carlis who went down during 1-on-1's and was laying on his back for a long time getting his left knee looked at. He needed help getting off the field and was having trouble putting pressure on his knee.
The run game was on fire today, especially in goal line drills. Gordon, Oliver, Farrow all had easy touchdowns today. The fullbacks Watt and Swain made some good blocks as well. For those that are wondering, I charted the first team Offense run plays and whether they ran it under center or in shotgun and if there was a fullback or not. Here's how the ten run plays with the first team Offense in 11-on-11's shook out:
Under Center (No FB): 6
Under Center (With FB): 2
Shotgun (No FB): 1
Shotgun (With FB): 1
Small sample size but I like those numbers.
In the last drill, safety Adrian Phillips got to play with the starters over Jahleel Addae and Addae ran with the second team defense. I can't say I put too much weight into this right now, but it'll be an interesting thing to watch moving forward.
There weren't a ton of highlights today so I'll just fire a few off. "House Tyrell" had a big chunk play over the middle but what else is new. Melvin Gordon dropped a pass at the goal line but looked a lot better in the run game than previous practices. Isaiah Burse had a large gain on a pitch. Tourek Williams made a great play off the edge to get a tackle for a loss in the backfield.
