Stevie Johnson has a bad knee. At least, Stevie Johnson has an injured knee. A torn meniscus, if you want to be specific, and he’s set to have surgery on it and miss anywhere from 2 weeks to 26 weeks depending on who is speculating about it and the severity of the injury.
I’m not saying the San Diego Chargers need to necessarily sign a free agent WR to replace Stevie Johnson as the slot WR, but I thought I’d plan ahead and look at what is out there just in case the news is bad.
The Obvious Options
Roddy White - Roddy isn’t quite the star WR that he once was, but he’s good enough in small doses that he could be useful in the slot WR spot with Philip Rivers throwing to him.
Percy Harvin - A known headache that is known for getting headaches, but a hell of a player that would sure create some mismatches any time a defense dared putting a LB or Safety on him in the slot.
“Under The Radar” Guys
Jerricho Cotchery - Rivers’ favorite target in college has found new life in the last few seasons once coaches stopped trying to make him a starter. This would probably be the QB’s choice.
Brian Hartline - A very successful career with the Miami Dolphins led Hartline to the Cleveland Browns last year where things took a slight detour. Is exactly the kind of guy that would succeed in this system.
The “No, Please No” Guys
Please don’t bother naming any of these gentlemen in the comments below. The reasons should be obvious.
Marques Colston
Malcom Floyd
Dwayne Bowe
Devin Hester
Greg Jennings
Seyi Ajirotutu
Jason Avant
There you have it! Hopefully the Chargers will have absolutely no need for this list. But, in case they do, here it is!
