The San Diego Padres pick eighth overall, and have five of the first 71 picks of the draft, more than any team in baseball, giving them a busy Thursday night. In addition to their regular picks in the first and second rounds, the Padres received the 24th and 25th overall picks for losing free agents Justin Upton and Ian Kennedy, plus the No. 71 pick in Competitive Balance Round B, one of 12 picks awarded by lottery among the teams with the 10 lowest revenues and in the 10 smallest markets.
