During Minicamp, we heard from various members of the team talking about how "disappointed" they were that Joey Bosa was holding out due to a contract dispute. Garrett Sisti has offered his opinion, and John Gennaro was able to get some input from Shawne Merriman, who was also a high first round pick for the Chargers who held out during the offseason of his rookie year.
Well, now we hear from one of Bosa's agents, Todd France.
Top Agent Todd France of @CAASports updates @alexmarvez and Kirk Morrison on Joey Bosa rookie contract #Chargers https://t.co/8yWSeUmuWc— SiriusXM NFL Radio (@SiriusXMNFL) June 20, 2016
Todd very calmly explains that even though the overall dollar amount of these slotted contracts is very straight forward, there is still a lot that can be done with the language of the contract as far as when bonuses are paid, offset language, injury guarantees, etc., etc. He says that negotiations stalled with the Chargers, so they advised Bosa to stop attending practice for now to lower the risk of any injury happening before he has a contract. Which is perfectly reasonable. He was basically "playing for free" until this point, and if we are being realistic, skipping two days of minicamp is not going to ruin Bosa's rookie season or career. Especially not as much as an injury would.
The team gets back together on July 29th; hopefully, this is all done and over with before then.
