Could San Diego Chargers end up in Las Vegas if the Raiders stay in Oakland?

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman hints that city could target Chargers.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman was interviewed by Darren Smith of the Darren Smith Show yesterday and she discussed a number of issues surrounding Vegas' pursuit of the Oakland Raiders. The whole thing is worth a listen, but we're going to focus on the part that has the chance to impact the San Diego Chargers.

While Ms. Goodman remains confident that Mark Davis and the Raiders will relocate, and the Chargers are still dedicated to getting a stadium built in San Diego, it's worth noting that Ms. Goodman is a long-time Chargers season ticket holder and she says that Vegas would be interested in the Chargers if the Raiders stay in Oakland and San Diego can't get a stadium built.

Everything breaking that direction and the Chargers choosing Las Vegas over Los Angeles seems rather unlikely, but the idea that it could be on the table is just another layer of intrigue in the ongoing stadium saga. It's hard to say if it would be easier or more difficult for San Diego-based fans to continue supporting the Chargers in Vegas rather than LA. The distance is greater, but Vegas doesn't bring the same baggage to the situation that LA does. I've not met too many people that hate Las Vegas but hating LA sometimes feels like a prerequisite for living in San Diego.
