Today starts the "legal tampering period", where NFL teams can talk to (and negotiate with) players. However, nobody can actually sign a contract until Wednesday afternoon.
This two day period is when most of the big free agent deals go down, with handshake and verbal agreements working to land the "big fish" players on (mostly) new teams. If the San Diego Chargers are to sign a Malik Jackson or a Marvin Jones or a Damon Harrison, chances are we'll hear about it today and it'll become official on Wednesday.
How exciting!
Factor in that the team's plans in the 2016 NFL Draft, and their plans with the #3 overall selection, will swing wildly based on what happens over the next few days, and it's easy to estimate the start of free agency as incredibly important.
I've already seen one website predict that the Chargers would come to an agreement on terms with safety Tashaun Gipson today, which would be nice but would probably take them out of the running for Jalen Ramsey with their first round pick. Now I'm unsure if I want that to happen!
