San Diego took on the Tennessee Titans for a game that was important for a few reasons. At 3-5 the Chargers need to basically win out to have any hope of the playoffs, so a win at home vs the Titans would be a good way to kick that off. This is also the last game, and last home game, before Tuesday’s vote where the Chargers are asking San Diegans to vote yes on C to help pay for their stadium.
The Chargers came through with the win and here were the best things from the game.
If I could put Melvin for all 3 things I would. He was awesome today. MG3 ran like a man possessed. He ran for 196 yards on 32 carries, a 6.125 ypc avg, including a TD on the ground which puts him at a league leading 11 total TD’s. On top of that, he added 65 yards receiving on 4 catches. Even more impressive was the fact that he did this against a very good Tennessee run defense. Well done MG3...Well done.
The Chargers ILB corps has been absolutely decimated by injury. Manti Te’o out for the year. Denzel Perryman was out this week. Jatavis Brown was out this week. So the team trotted out Korey Toomer, who has been with the team for only a few weeks and moved OLB Kyle Emanuel inside this week. Despite all that Toomer lead the team with 8 tackles and had a forced fumble which Dwight Lowery took 41 yards for a touchdown. Toomer has proved to be a great find by Tom Telesco and his staff since being plucked from the Raiders practice squad.
Antonio Gates/Brandon Flowers
Gates picked a great time to have his best game of the season. Hunter Henry was out this week and the Chargers WR’s are all banged up so they really needed the future Hall of Famer to dig deep and show he’s still got it. Gates collected 5 receptions for a team-leading 75 yards and a TD. He also put together probably his best game blocking in years.
Flowers meanwhile came back from injury in a big way. He has returned to form in run support and made some great tackles at and behind the LOS keeping a very good Titans run game under 100 yards. He did surrender a big gain in coverage but came back and more than made up for it with a pick 6 to help seal the game.
I was the only staff member to predict a Chargers Loss and I am glad to have been proven wrong. I thought there would be too many injuries for the Chargers to overcome, and everyone who needed to step up put up a good performance.
